NPHS APRIL NEWSLETTER 2021
Greetings!
Good morning Bulldog Country, and Happy Spring to you all! Thanks for joining us in another Newsletter this month. As you have noticed, the format is a little different. I'm experimenting here, and if this method works well, we'll use it, and if not, we'll go back to the digital magazine style we have used before. It is unreal that April is already here. NPHS has been able to have classes in person for 3.5 quarters, and in a short while we will have made it for an entire school year. Thanks to administrators, teachers, staff, faculty, students, visitors, etc. for helping us out and cooperating with masks, washing hands, and all those things. It took us all to get it done. Stay up-to-date for announcements at NPHS by checking out the district web site at NPPSD.ORG. We have had some good news with the announcement of 2021 Prom, and also Graduation, and as further details come out, they will be announced. We hope everyone has a great Spring, and take care!

NPHS Journalism to Sell its Photos:
“Can I get a copy of that?” is often asked of North Platte High School Journalism photographers while on assignment. For the first time ever, the “J-Squad” (Journalism Squad) will be selling their photos to the public starting Friday, March 26 at nphsjournalism.smugmug.com.
The students creating the NPHS Bulldogger student newspaper and Round Up yearbook spend 12 months a year documenting the school year through both photos and reporting. Journalism adviser Lori Larson said the students take hundreds of shots at each event. “Many photos never make it into a publication because of space,” she said. “Now, people can see all of our outstanding photos.”
Larson said selling the photos is a service to the parents, students and community. “Our photographers have been able to capture many of the moments that parents and fans didn’t get to see this year,” she said. “We want to share those.”
Yearbook news editor Jay Castañeda has been building the site. “We have taken tens of thousands of photos this year, but tried to make a site that is easy to navigate so you can easily find your sport, event or person,“ he said.
Castañeda organized the photos into folders by school year, then subject (like: football, one-act plays), and then event date. People can buy a digital download for less than a dollar each. However, commercial usage downloads, prints and gifts will cost more.
Photography editor Elsacia Buck said journalism photographers analyze their photos and pick out the best ones for publication, but other photos may be important to parents, students or their friends. The photos available for sale will include all of the shots, even the ones that might be poorly composed or out of focus. “That photo might be the only one taken of a student,” she said.
Castañeda said that journalism students plan to upload previous years’ photos before the end of this school year.
Proceeds from the sale of NPHS Journalism photos will go towards enrichment opportunities for journalism students.
Speech:
Speech season is officially wrapped up. (Except Josh) Most of the team got to compete at state and we are so proud of all of them. The team qualified 13 different events and 15 competitors for the State Competition. The Speech Team was district runner-up for 2021. At state the team performed well and just missed out on finals in numerous events. Joshua Stoner was state champion in Entertainment Speaking! While the teams season is over Joshua will continue into the summer as he competes in Nationals representing North Platte in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Spring Play:
The cast has been selected and practice is underway for another glitter-filled adventure! Follow Charlie as he embarks on a journey through the factory of none other than Willy Wonka himself. We will have two show days with two performances on April 26 and 27, with showtimes at 5:30 and 7:30. The theater department is also so excited to announce that we will be hosting a little bulldogs camp on April 17th! The camp will run from 9-12 and we will have a few different stations for the children to participate in. This will be our first camp and we cannot wait to see as many kids as possible! We will teach them some skills and they will be a special part of our show. If you have any questions please feel free to email Mr. Cooper ( dcooper@nppsd.org) or Miss Adams (sadams@nppsd.org) .

Technology Classes:
Mr. Petersen's technology classes have been working hard this term making themselves marketable in a career and college-ready world.
Computer Apps 2 students have been working with Microsoft Office learning advanced techniques with word processing and spreadsheets. Students will be doing some work with GPS, GIS, and the program ArcGIS to learn ways to gather and interpret data in emerging technologies. Students will then have some experience with databases and presentations.
Advanced Graphic Design and Programming 2 students are sharing a class period to collaboratively work on creating a computer game using the Unreal game engine. It has been very impressive to see students organize themselves into small groups to complete the various elements of the game. There are also some Advanced Graphic Design students who are working on independent projects over digital design topics of their choice.
Web Design 2 students are learning to use Dreamweaver to make responsive web sites that demonstrate responsive design. Responsive design is the practice of making web pages that automatically adjust to fit a screen size and display content appropriately for web viewing on any device.
To stay current with announcements and updates from class, you can check in at Mr. Petersen's Twitter account @nphs_tech.
